Kutless

Formed in Portland, Oregon as a Campus Worship band named Call Box, they performed during the 1999-2000 school year at Warner Pacific. The Band changed their name to “Kutless” in October 2001 before releasing their first three track EP, followed up by their full-length album in 2002 on BEC Recordings. Kutless chose their name because of a specific Bible verse – Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Because of this, the band says, “He took our cuts for us… leaving us ‘Kutless’. They released their seventh album “Believer” on February 28, 2012. It topped the iTunes Christian albums sales chart and debuted at No. 36 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart plus debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Christian Albums chart for the week of March 17, 2012.

With two million records sold across its first five efforts, Oregon rock band Kutless had already made a strong name for itself. But the late 2009 release of “It Is Well,” the quintet’s second worship set, continues to be a complete game changer. On one hand, the edgy act’s first No. 1 adult contemporary single, “What Faith Can Do,” is remarkable, as are the rave reviews…

Beyond the band’s brightening internal artistic merits, it’s inspiring to hear the Kutless members talk about what they are learning outside of their own instincts — the lessons that transcend any given genre to improve both creative and ministry impact. They’ve watched gospel-based acts like Israel Houghton and aspired to bring similar passion and dedicated musicianship to their own rock concerts. They’ve spoken with recent tour mates Casting Crowns, adopting its practice of walking through the empty performance halls ahead of show time, touching the seats and praying for those who will be in attendance. And there were plenty of insights gained from working with veteran producer Brown Bannister (Amy Grant, MercyMe) on It Is Well’s standout hit, “What Faith Can Do,” written by outside friends Scott Davis and Scott Krippayne.

EVAN CRAFT

Evan Craft

Born and raised in the Conejo Valley of Southern California, Evan Craft has been around music and the church his whole life. At the early age of 12 Craft began to play the guitar, and by the time high school had passed by he had become highly proficient in singing, writing music, and had even completed his first album, Spotlight. Local success of his first album, combined with having a hit song on YouTube, led him to a deal with Dream Records. Now with support of a label, Craft is able to explore his music career to a wider audience. His debut, Giants, became an immediate hit and opened the doors to producing Yo Soy Segundo with friends Bob Curtin and Sean Cook (bass player of Billboard Chart Toppers, Press Play). Craft has had the amazing opportunity to travel the country playing from east to west coast opening for critically appraised bands Third Eye Blind, Carolina Liar, Eric Hutcheson and Tyrone Wells. Evan most recently has been traveling to churches, schools and even orphanages, evangelically reaching out to those in need of God.

With the release of Yo Soy Segundo (I Am Second), Craft intends to leap the hurdles of language and reach out to the Spanish speakers of America and Latin America with a more in-depth worship of God. Whereas Giants was more pop/rock, Yo Soy Segundo features more soulful music that is worship based and melody driven, making it easy for the audience to sing along and relate to.

With a greater goal in mind, Craft explains that there is more at work than the eye sees. “My goal for this album is to be more than a singer and a songwriter. My job is to lift God’s name on high for the people and let Him take care of the rest. I am just a tool for God, a resounding trumpet, a lighter for Him the Almighty.”

You can order Yo Soy Segundo and Giants at the Dream Records Store.
